< return to main news page

The Society of St Vincent De Paul recently launched its first annual school competition entitled "Frederic Ozanam National School Competition". The competition started at the beginning of the school year in September and is scheduled to end in November 2005.

National President Bro Anthony Wong Doo presents the competition package to Acting Vice Principal of Nelson Street Girls' School, Eugenia Augustus. Looking on are Standard Four students - Jewel Francis and Skekelliah Alexander and President of the Public Relations Committee, Natalie Millington

The competition was the brainchild of the Public Relations Committee of the Society and its main objective is to commemorate the feast of Frederic Ozanam celebrated on September 27.

In addition to this, the competition is intended to educate and sensitise our young people about the life and works of Frederic Ozanam, in an effort to motivate them to live lives of service, just as Frederic Ozanam did, by serving the poor.

It is open to all Catholic and Government, primary and secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago and it is anticipated that this competition will enhance the spiritual aspects of the lives of these young persons through their renewed commitment to make the poor and destitute a part of their own lives.

Questions will be taken from an 'Ozanam Booklet' and a grand draw will take place to choose eight persons from all the correct entries. The primary school segment will consist of an art competition to depict what the students have gained from the booklet, while the secondary school students will form four teams of two persons each and these eight persons will compete in a live quiz to be aired on TCN, Channel 10.

Entries are to be sent the Society of St Vincent de Paul, PO Box, 1105, 20 Duncan Street, Port of Spain. Teachers, religious instructors, catechists, SVP members and parents are asked to encourage participation in this competition via your particular councils, schools and parish communities, in order to ensure its success. For further information please contact the SVP Secretariat at 623-4926.
